The Fly

The Fly

The Fly is a dark comedy short film released in 2015 and directed by Olly Williams. It follows a getaway driver for a group of bank robbers who waits outside for his companions but is accompanied by a fly that is irritating him. The film progresses ass the man attempts to kill the fly, using basic techniques at first, but as he becomes more and more irritated and as tensions start to build he becomes more aggressive and his reactions become more and more over the top. He ends up by shooting the car, destroying the getaway vehicle, and supposedly landing him and his crew in jail.

Throughout the film, very tight framing is used in the form of close-ups to create a sense of claustrophobia and to reflect the mans irritation at being trapped in the car with the fly.

Long shots are also used to show the perspective of passers by and emphasise how ridiculous what is happening is, as watching the event from far away with the man flailing around the car creates some comedy.

Mise-en-scène is used effectively to create a realistic situation, with the man being in a car that looks like it could be used as a getaway vehicle, realistic props like the shotgun which are consistent with the man being a criminal, and all of the other crew members wearing masks, and being covered in blood, emphasising that they just robbed the bank.

Overall, the micro elements of film are used to create a darkly comic short film which makes the spectators wince and cringe, but also makes them laugh at the getaway drivers comic overreactions.
